I had to admit, before I had my own child, I would find other people’s kids annoying–at times. When a child would exhibit socially inappropriate behavior, I’d wonder about the actual parenting their parents were doing.
Now that I have my own child, I’m a bit less judgmental. I realize sometimes you can teach your child all there is to know, but he or she will be who they will be. I’ve been riding high on this idea as of late.
However, when your kids pulls out a cell phone in church, during the sermon, and proceeds to hold a conversation…I can’t!
This is what happened during mass Sunday morning: This little boy–looked about 10–was sitting with his grandfather. During the sermon, his phone starts to ring loudly. The boy picks up the phone and starts having a conversation! He didn’t even whisper. He raised his voice so he could drown out the priest.
I just about fell out!
Of course, other parishioners were flabbergasted too. Everyone seemed to be looking at him–annoyed.
The grandfather then started to reprimand him. Nope. Not in a whisper. He was loud too!
All I could think was, “Oh my word! This can’t be happening.”
Now, I know everyone has different values and such. However, there are social graces that children should be taught.
I’d like to believe that child in church was saying he just couldn’t talk right now. He just didn’t know the best thing to do was to just click the sound off.
I believe children should have access to technology, but if someone is going to buy their child a tablet or phone, the least they can do is teach that child when not to use it.
